Mouth Guards Can Add Decades to the
Life of Your Teeth
Using a mouth guard on a regular basis can protect your teeth from damage and even destruction. We can all use some help in making our teeth last as long as possible, so perhaps it’s time to look at how a mouth guard might help extend the life of your teeth.
What is a dental mouth guard?
A mouth guard is a protective device that covers the teeth in a way that reduces or eliminates injury. A mouth guard is frequently used by athletes to protect teeth from injury in contact sports. But the most common use of mouth guards is to protect the teeth from bruxism, or teeth grinding. It is also commonly used for TMD, or Temporo-Mandibular Disorder, or as part of some dental procedures.
Your guide to mouth guards:
There are three basic types of mouth guards, and your dentist will suggest which type is right for your situation.
Stock Mouth Guard
This is a prefabricated protector that can usually be purchased where sporting goods are sold. Typically dentists don’t recommend these kinds of mouth guards because they can’t be custom-tailored to your mouth, and don’t provide very effective protection.
Boil and Bite Mouth Guard
These are usually made of a plastic polymer and are softened in hot water, then bitten on to mold over the teeth. The result is a semi-customized temporary guard that offers some protection to the teeth. There is a better option for mouth guards.
Custom Mouth Guards
Our dentist will create a custom mouth guard that is designed specially to fit your teeth. They offer the best fit and the best protection, although they may cost a little more than some store-bought varieties. Reach out to us for a personalized quote!
